On our actual anniversary we spent the day seeing some more of Vienna's sights. We headed back to the hotel around half six so we would have time to relax then get ready for our dinner reservation at 8.30pm.
We went to the restaurant at the DO & CO Hotel, located in the main square, Stephanplatz. After being shown to our table we started with a glass of Rose Champagne to celebrate while looking at the menu.
All of the food sounded delicious and there was a lot to choose from including international, Asian or Viennese cuisine. The kitchens were completely open so you could watch the chefs at work at the different stations and could see all of the fresh fish ready to be cooked.
I settled on nigiri sushi {including tuna, salmon, prawn & a few other things} to start while Graham tried a dish which had goose liver served two ways with Thai mango. The sushi was as good as the kind I had while on our honeymoon even if I wasn't sure what a couple of the items were!
I continued with the Asian menu and chose the tuna & stir-fry veg served with wasabi mash while Graham tried one of their specialities, Uruguayan beef with shallots and a potato & leek mash. Graham reckoned it was the nicest bit of beef he has ever had and my tuna was cooked to perfection, lovely and pink in the middle. The wasabi mash was really nice and not too strong, despite its colour; although it did get a little spicy by the time I finished it.
The desserts looked wonderful so I tried the trio of chocolate mousse with berries in a sugar basket and Graham had the chocolate souffle & passion fruit creme brulee. Each of the chocolate mousses was delicious although I think the dark chocolate one was my favourite. The sugar basket & fruits were served with sour cream which was unusual but really nice, especially since I don't like normal cream.
The food was wonderful but it was not at all cheap, at over €200 it was probably the most expensive meal we have ever had. I'm sure the champagne and wine didn't help but it was definitely worth it for our first anniversary. One of the reviews we read said that the portions were quite small which we didn't feel at all; they weren't massive but were more than enough and meant we could enjoy each of the three courses fully.
Afterwards we went to Loos American Bar for a couple of cocktails. Its a tiny bar inside with just two booths but we managed to get a stool at the bar where I sampled the Loos Champagne Cocktail followed by a Cosmopolitan while Graham stuck to his favourite Mojitos. It was really odd as you were still allowed to smoke inside, including the staff behind the bar, although you weren't allowed to take photos! We ended our evening with a lovely walk back to hotel; not by choice but because we had missed the last underground on a Sunday night!
Next year I'm not sure how we will be able to top our first anniversary trip & meal although we still have the option of returning to our wedding venue, which we did consider before choosing to go away. We spent the year before the wedding at our venue so it would be lovely to go back for one of our anniversaries.
